Flower Studies

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 693

The practice page of ink drawings at top was made during the reign of Shah Jahan (r. 1628–58), when naturalistic flowers became the hallmark design in Mughal architecture and decorative arts. It depicts nineteen botanical studies of flowers such as lily, narcissus, iris, tulip, Persian violet, carnation, poppy, anemone, trillium, and campion.
